Stan Bowes, a legendary figure, played 184 games for Cardiff over twelve seasons 1938/39 -1955/56 scoring seven tries. A tough prop forward and character of the club he once reportedly almost pulled out of a game at Llandovery because the team he had been selected to play for were wearing Black and Amber. He refused to have Newport colours next to his skin and would not put the shirt on until somebody found him a Cardiff shirt to wear underneath the ‘Black and Amber rag’.
