Barry Nelmes joined Cardiff in 1973 and packed down with Alan Phillips and Mike Knill. Having been Vice-Captain for two seasons he was made Captain in the 1978/79 season. He played 166 first team matches. Nelmes was born in Bristol, and played for them before joining Cardiff, making his Bristol debut as a 16 year old. He represented England Schools U15's against Wales in 1963. Two years later he was selected for Western Counties XV that beat the touring Wallabies. He went on to gain 6 England caps making his debut against Australia in Sydney 1975. His last cap was against New Zealand at Twickenham in 1975. He was the first Cardiff player to be capped by England. He also appeared for the Barbarians against the British and Irish Lions in 1977 and again the following year against the All Blacks in Cardiff.
