Richard "Richie" Wills was born in Monmouthshire and was an outstanding player in his youth. Educated in Abergavenny and at Newport College of Art he started his rugby career with Newport in 1958 at the age of 19. In 1963 he joined Cardiff and played in 44 games over four seasons with the club, he also played for Ebbw Vale. In 1962 he represented Hampshire in the County Championship Final at Twickenham and he also represented Glamorgan and Monmouth at County level. After a career lasting ten years he retired from rugby to concentrate on becoming a professional artist.
At the 1991 Rugby World Cup (held in the UK and Ireland) he was the official artist and has painted portraits of many famous people, including Martyn Williams, Gareth Edwards and Lord Tonypandy (George Thomas).
