Jersey - Northern Transvaal

Object Id:
1907
Info:
Jersey donated by C. V. P. Airey from South Africa.
Sent, in February 1980, with these words -
"To mark my feeling of privilege at having been, for about 30 years, a member of the premier rugby football club of all the world.
Over those years, I have made many friendships among my fellow members, and this is to show in particular my appreciation of the close friendship I enjoy with two of the Club's most distinguished players, and great men, Stan Bowes and Bleddyn Williams.
To add a small note of personal tribute to the memory of Hubert Johnson who set up this museum, and whose contribution to the Club in so many ways is imperishable.
I send the Northern Transvaal jersey as, not only has this team through the 1970's been as dominant in South African Rugby as the Welsh side has been in Europe, but the spirit in which the game is played here at Loftus Versfeld, hard, clean and based on proper adherence to the basic principles, finds a responsive note in the Cardiff club. If there is one other place in the whole world of Rugby Football which has an atmosphere even remotely comparable with the Cardiff club, it is Loftus Versfeld"
