This match marked the opening of the present ground following the leasing for the former rugby pitch to the WRU for the development of the national stadium. Before the match seventeen former club captains paraded on the pitch and the game was kicked of by the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, T. E. Merrels. The President's XV was captained by Tom Kiernan of Ireland and included seven British Lions.
